چکیده

This article presents a new approach to matching occupancy grid maps by means of finding correspondences between a set of sparse features detected in the maps. The problem is stated here as a special instance of generic image registration. To cope with the uncertainty and ambiguity that arise from matching grid maps, we introduce a modified RANSAC algorithm which searches for a dynamic number of internally consistent subsets of feature pairings from which to compute hypotheses about the translation and rotation between the maps. By providing a (possibly multi-modal) probability distribution of the relative pose of the maps, our method can be seamlessly integrated into large-scale mapping frameworks for mobile robots. This article provides a benchmarking of different detectors and descriptors, along extensive experimental results that illustrate the robustness of the algorithm with a 97% success ratio in loop-closure detection for ∼ 1700 matchings between local maps obtained from four publicly available datasets.

Occupancy Grids: A Stochastic Spatial Representation for Active Robot Perception

In this paper we provide an overview of a new framework for robot perception, real-world modelling, and navigation that uses a stochastic tesselated representation of spatial in formation called the Occupancy Grid. The Occupancy Grid is a multi-dimensional randomfield model that maintains probabilistic estimates of the occupancy state of each cell in a spatia/lattice. Bayesian estimation mecha...

A New Method for Robust and Efficient Occupancy Grid-Map Matching

In this paper we propose a new matching method for occupancy grid-maps under the perspective of image registration. Our approach is based on extracting feature descriptors by means of a polar coordinate transformation around highly distinctive points. The proposed method presents a modest computation complexity, although it can find matchings between features reliably and regardless their orien...

An Experimental Comparison of Image Feature Detectors and Descriptors applied to Grid Map Matching

Applying computer vision feature detectors and descriptors to occupancy grids has important practical applications for the problem of grid map matching in mobile robot localization and mapping, although this approach has received little attention by the community. This review presents a thorough performance evaluation for several combinations of detectors (Harris, KLT, SIFT and SURF) and descri...

Fusion multi-vue d’informations de silhouettes à l’aide d’une grille d’occupation 3D Fusion of Multi-View Silhouette Cues Using a Space Occupancy Grid

In this paper, we investigate what can be inferred from several silhouette probability maps, in multi-camera environments. To this aim, we propose a new framework for multiview silhouette cue fusion. This framework uses a space occupancy grid as a dense probabilistic 3D representation of scene contents. Such a representation is of great interest for various computer vision applications in perce...

A Hierarchical Approach to Sonar-Based Landmark Detection in Mobile Robots

Landmark recognition in autonomous robots entails extracting symbolic information from sensory data, and is a crucial phase in bridging the gap between the symbolic and the sub-symbolic worlds. In this paper we propose a technique which identi es landmarks by matching a set of templates with a local occupancy grid built by sonar measures; another coarse-grained occupancy grid is used to decide ...
